Chapter 1 – Gabriel’s New Life in Edinburgh

Run!  Run!!  Gabriel’s ears twitched.  A low moan came from his throat.

“Wake up, Gabriel!  Wake Up!” Poetry shook her best friend, Gabriel, the little white dog.  “Wake up!  It’s only a dream.”

Gabriel’s eyes flew open to see Poetry the Calico Cat—his best friend who’d he’d had quite an adventure trying to find after she’d moved from Maryland in the U.S.A. to Edinburgh, Scotland—far across the ocean.  It had been just yesterday they’d found each other in a park in Edinburgh.

“Oh, Gabriel, are you OK?” Poetry asked with concern in her voice.

Now fully awake Gabriel replied, “Yes, I’m OK.  I was just dreaming about the time that man in the furniture truck chased me.”  That was at the very beginning of his journey to find Poetry.  He had told her all about it the night before.  Poetry had listened in amazement until the Mrs. of the House had insisted they both be given baths.  Poetry still had some soot on her from climbing up the chimney to get out of the house so she could look for Gabriel, and Gabriel hadn’t ever had a bath because he hadn’t been a dog for very long.  When he’d been a snowman in his previous life he’d been “bathed” by the sun melting his coating of snow.

“Let’s go downstairs and see what the Mrs. has for breakfast,” Poetry suggested.

“Yum!” Gabriel agreed.

The three little boys had already left for school so the Mrs. of the House suggested to Poetry that she show Gabriel his way around Edinburgh so that he wouldn’t get lost if he went out on his own.
