The story behind the story: The Adventures of Poetry the Calico Cat and her best friend Gabriel the Snowman were written in 1997. Ten years later I lost Poetry to cancer. By then all three of my sons had grown up and left home. A year later I was experiencing empty-nest syndrome pretty badly so I set out to find a West Highland White terrier because I loved their tenacious personality. Soon I was missing not having a cat. I was inspired to write a story about Gabriel the Snowman missing his best friend Poetry and not being able to search for her because he didn't have legs. The plan was once I finished the story I'd go in search of another calico cat myself. But as things worked out Poetry, Too (the name of my new cat) came into my life sooner than expected. The story was set aside for most of the year until I finally sat down and finished it in 2010.
